OFT Clients were interviewed in depth by the New York Times to show how Listeria causes serious health concerns for high-risk groups like pregnant women and older adults.

OFT client Ashley Solberg, who contracted Listeria while 36-weeks pregnant, described the harrowing experience:  “The doctor came in and said there’s a possibility that your baby won’t make it, and said over and over how serious a listeria infection is,” she said. “I was terrified.”

The New York Times also highlighted the experience of OFT client Sue Flemming. Ms. Fleming, an 89-year-old retired psychotherapist in Missouri, became infected in July but has not come even close to fully recovering. She continues doing physical therapy several times a week in an effort to regain her strength.

Her illness started with violent convulsions, the Times reported. “I thought my bones were going to fly out of my body, and I couldn’t pull myself tight enough to stop them,” she told the Times. Her ordeal continued with long stays in the hospital and then in a rehabilitation facility.

As the Times article points out, the true scope of the Boar’s Head outbreak “could be far greater than health officials have reported.” As in every outbreak, the true number of people impacted is far greater than the reported number of cases because many people are not tested, diagnosed or do not seek medical care.

The Times also published a detailed story about the history of sanitation violations at the Boar’s Head processing facility in Jarrett, Virginia. The noncompliance records show that the Boar’s Head processing was marred by a host of sanitation violations, including green mold, leaking pipes, and meat residue on food contact surfaces.
