Salmonella Paratyphi B Outbreak in Minnesota Linked to Nekter Juice Bar

On October 9, 2020 the Minnesota Department of Public Health announced an outbreak of salmonellosis illnesses traced back to the Nekter (NéktƏr) Juice Bar in Woodbury, Minnesota. So far, at least nine people have become sick and two have been hospitalized.

The victims of this outbreak ate a variety of items at the juice bar from mid-August to September 20. As of yet, no specific food item has been identified as the source of the infections. People who ate at Nekter Juice Bar and have had symptoms of salmonellosis, but who have not yet sought health care, should mention this outbreak to their doctor if they seek health care.

Salmonella Paratyphi B

There are more than 2,500 serotypes of Salmonella, but fewer than 100 cause infections in humans. One of these strains, called Paratyphi B, has been implicated in the current outbreak. Salmonella poisoning can be so severe that it requires people to be hospitalized, and at least 2 people have already been hospitalized in this outbreak.

Salmonella can even be fatal when the infection leaves the intestines and travels to the bloodstream or other parts of the body. It is also possible to experience long-term side effects, including joint pain known as reactive arthritis, which is also known as Reiter’s Syndrome. This can last for months or years and result in chronic arthritis, which is difficult to treat. Reactive arthritis can also lead to eye irritation and painful urination. In rare cases, some types of Salmonella cause typhoid fever, which can be fatal.
