Outbreak Summary

On December 5, 2023, CooperSurgical issued an “Urgent Media Recall: Field Safety Notice” with respect to its “LifeGlobal global® Media” with Lot Numbers 231020-018741, 231020-018742, and 231020-018743. The recall notice stated that CooperSurgical had received an alarming “sudden increase” in the number of complaints about these particular lots of the media. According to CooperSurgical, these lots did not contain the required amount of magnesium necessary to nurture the development of healthy embryos in the medium.

OFT Law’s Brendan Flaherty and Bart Torvik have been retained to pursue legal compensation for many clients whose embryos have been destroyed or degraded after coming into contact with toxic substances intended to nurture them. Earlier this year, we filed a lawsuit on in federal court in Massachusetts based on similar claims.

CooperSurgical Recalls Global Media for Embryo Culture Due to Safety Concerns

Use of Media for Culturing and Storing Embryos

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common type of assisted reproductive technology, and it has helped millions of people have babies since it was first pioneered in the 1970s. The IVF process entails extracting eggs from a woman, which are then fertilized with sperm to create a viable embryo, which is later implanted into a uterus. In many cases, it is necessary to store the embryos for a period of time prior to implantation, and in such cases the embryos must be carefully preserved.

The media recalled by CooperSurgical is used to help preserve embryos between the time they are created and the time they are implanted. It is crucial that this media be pristine and completely free from contamination. CooperSurgical markets its media as “an optimized in vitro environment” for the culture and development of fertilized eggs.

With over five decades of combined experience, the lawyers at OFT Law have recovered millions on behalf of victims of contaminated products, including infant formula, food, and medical products.
