What is Salmonella Montevideo?

Salmonella Montevideo is one of the many serotypes of Salmonella bacteria that can cause food poisoning. While fewer than 100 serotypes commonly infect humans, Salmonella Montevideo is among those that can lead to severe illness. Salmonella poisoning can result in hospitalization and, in some cases, can be fatal. The bacteria can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and other parts of the body, leading to life-threatening conditions.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically appear 6 hours to 6 days after consuming contaminated food. These symptoms can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

In some cases, Salmonella infection can lead to dehydration and more severe complications, especially in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Long-term effects can include reactive arthritis (Reiter’s Syndrome), causing joint pain, eye irritation, and painful urination.

The Bedner Growers Cucumber Outbreak

The current Salmonella Montevideo outbreak involves cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc.

  • As of May 19, 2025, at least 26 people across 15 states have been infected.
  • Nine people have been hospitalized.
  • The cucumbers were distributed to stores, restaurants, and food service distributors.
  • Illnesses started between April 2, 2025, and April 28, 2025.
  • Several people who fell ill ate cucumbers on cruise ships departing from Florida ports.

The FDA conducted an inspection at Bedner Farms Inc. and found Salmonella in environmental samples that matched the strain from sick individuals.

What to Do If You’ve Been Affected

If you tested positive for Salmonella after consuming contaminated cucumbers, it is essential to:

  1. Seek medical attention immediately.
Retain any packaging or receipts related to the cucumber purchase.
Contact a food safety lawyer to discuss your legal options.
