Outbreak Summary

July 17, 2025

OFT Law is closely monitoring a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Anatum infections. This serious foodborne illness outbreak has been traced back to Chetak LLC’s DEEP brand frozen sprouted mat (moth) beans and frozen sprouted moong (mung) beans. Federal health agencies, including the FDA and CDC, are actively investigating, and a recall is in effect.

As of July 17, 2025, a total of 11 individuals across 10 states have fallen ill in connection with this Salmonella Anatum outbreak. The affected states include Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington. Four people have required hospitalization due to their illness, though fortunately no deaths have been reported so far.

The investigation gained traction in May 2025 when routine product sampling identified Salmonella in Deep-brand frozen sprouted beans. Subsequent whole genome sequencing confirmed that this Salmonella matched the strain causing illnesses in the outbreak.

Recalled Frozen Sprouted Beans — Check Your Freezers!

In response to this grave public health threat, Chetak LLC Group has proactively initiated a recall of specific lots of their Deep-brand frozen sprouted beans. Consumers, retailers, and food service establishments are urged to immediately check their freezers for these potentially contaminated products.

The recalled items are certain production lots of:

  • Deep-brand Sprouted Mat (Moth) beans in 1 LB (454 g) packages.
  • Deep-brand Sprouted Moong (Mung) beans in 1 LB (454 g) packages.

Production and distribution of these specific products have been halted as the investigation continues. Do not consume, sell, or serve any of these recalled frozen sprouted beans. It is also critical to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products to prevent cross-contamination.

Understanding Salmonella Symptoms

Salmonella infection, known as salmonellosis, can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms, including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms typically manifest within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and can persist for four to seven days. While many healthy individuals recover without extensive medical intervention, the illness can be particularly severe for young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, often necessitating hospitalization.

What to Do If You Became Ill After Eating Frozen Sprouted Beans

If you or a family member experienced symptoms consistent with Salmonella infection after consuming Deep-brand frozen sprouted mat or moong beans, especially those with the recalled lot codes, it is vital to take immediate action:

  1. Seek Medical Attention: Consult a healthcare provider promptly to receive a diagnosis and appropriate medical care. Be sure to inform them about your potential exposure to contaminated sprouted beans.
  2. Cooperate with Public Health: If you have tested positive, your public health department should be notified and they will reach out to you to get a food history and determine if you are part of the outbreak. If you consumed this product prior to getting sick, let them know. If you do not hear from the health department, you should notify them directly.
  3. Preserve Evidence: If possible, safely store and take pictures of any remaining recalled product (e.g., sealed in a plastic bag) and its packaging. This can be vital evidence for a potential legal claim.
  4. Contact a Salmonella Lawyer: Reach out to OFT Law for a free, no-obligation consultation. Our experienced foodborne illness attorneys are adept at investigating complex Salmonella outbreaks.
